Who Gives a Rat’s Ass (Quack, Quack)?

imus.jpgRELATED: Fire this couch, and how exactly does one spell hos/ho’s/hoes?

I never imagined a scenario in which I would feel a hint of compassion or sympathy for the generally loathsome Don Imus.  But life’s funny that way.

The I-Man’s “nappy-headed ho” comments have set everyone a-tizzy, with the predictably hysterical Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton calling for the broken-down cowboy’s ghastly leather head.  Even Dan Kennedy and our otherwise reasonable friends at the Beast Lair have demanded that Imus be fired from his radio and television gig.  But what’s the big fuss, I ask?  I don’t get it.

This is America.  If you say some dumb shit, you say some dumb shit.  But we have that right.  And those who object to our dumb shit have the right to voice their objections.  Recently, however, the saying of dumb shit has become a fireable offense.  In and of itself, that would be troubling.  But worse, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what constitutes ‘crossing the line.’  No one gets in trouble for saying something offensive.  They get in trouble for saying something that draws the attention of persistent and influential loudmouths like Al Sharpton.  And then the incident snowballs out of control, as the neverending mob of perfect souls steps down from the moral high ground to pile on for a good ol’ tsk-tsk beatdown.  No one is satisfied until the sorry sap is left with his career in ruins.

Don’t get me wrong.  Don Imus sucks.  He is the worst.  I can’t stand him.  Is that clear?

But 96.9 FM host Jay Severin here in greater Boston typically makes at least three statements more offensive than “nappy headed hos” by his first commercial break.  Where is the outrage over Jay?  When will he get his proper lynching?  You could easily go on and on with other examples, listing people who regularly get away with far worse than what Imus said.  Though some, such as John DePietro, another Boston DJ, have gotten their come-uppance.  DePietro, formerly of WRKO AM680, got canned after calling Massachusetts gubenatorial candidate Grace Ross a “fat lesbian.”  (Ross is, in fact, a lesbian and, well, a bit fat.)

If I ran a radio station, I wouldn’t employ Imus, Severin, or WEEI’s morning hosts Dennis & Callahan.  Their entire shows – taken as a whole – are offensive and, to me, unlistenable.  And if the market dictates they shouldn’t be around, then they shouldn’t be around.  But if I were to hire them, I certainly wouldn’t fire them for an isolated statement.  Where does that end?  Are we all at the mercy of those who have the capacity to whine the loudest?  Do the do-nothing pseudo-leaders like Jackson and Sharpton get the privilege of determining who gets free speech and who gets run out of town?

My sympathy only runs so deep.  For in the last couple days, Imus has shown that he does, indeed, deserve to be fired.  Not for his comments, but for his complete inability to stick up for himself.  My half-assed defense is far more than Imus could muster during his pathetic ‘I fought for recognition of the sickle cell epidemic!’ mea culpa.  If the man had any guts at all, he’d knock that Sharpton sheister off his high horse and tell Jesse to go fuck.  What a lowly wimp he’s proven to be.  It’s slightly embarrassing.

But long live Freedom of Speech, and more importantly, long live Howard Stern!  Baba-Booey, Baba-Booey!  Hi Fred.

  1. Did you see where he said “you people” on Al Shapton’s show? Of course Sharpton went all “What do you mean you people?” And Imus said “Come on, you know what I meant don’t give me that jive.” And then Shartpon said, “What do you mean ‘jive’.”

    That was pretty funny.

  2. And by the way we only called for his firings because we’re trying to court the religious right and suburban soccer mom audience…So that we can offend them at a later time.
