Do What You Feel Friday!: The McLaughlin Group

mclaughlin.jpgToday one of Lucy the Blog’s favorite Americans turns 80!  So we wish a very happy birthday to John McLaughlin, one of the few senior citizens we’d spare in our imaginary geriatric Holocaust.  On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 representing a dark, bleak day of loneliness and pain, and 10 representing a day filled with complete metaphysical bliss, we hope your day is an 11, Dr. McLaughlin.  And we wish you many, many more.

Since I first started watching in the fall of 2003, the Friday night broadcast of The McLaughlin Group has become a highlight of my week.  There are few things I enjoy more than throwing together some fajitas with the wife, taking a couple deep cleansing breaths, and kicking it with The Group.  Wash away the last five days.  Gear up for the next two.

It may not seem like a particularly exciting way to spend a Friday night.  But who’s got the energy for exciting Friday nights?  Give me McLaughlin.  There’s true artistry in The Group’s argumentation.  And despite the yelling and idealogical differences, there’s a sense that without the show, the commentators (regularly Tony Blankley, Pat Buchanan, and Eleanor Clift) would still gather around a coffee table and bitch about the issues of the day as friends.

But McLaughlin is the man.  The straw that stirs the drink.  He’s among the funniest, most open-minded and practial thinkers on TV, and he controls the debate like an orchestral conductor.  Furthermore, his fashion sense is impeccable!  I never cease to be blown away by those threads.

I doubt that any of you will take my advice and work The McLaughlin Group into your Friday night routine.  (For that matter, I think greater Boston is one of the only places where it airs on Friday night.)  But I felt compelled to thank the old guy on his birthday.  For the last five years, he’s been a cornerstone of my Do What You Feel Friday diet.  And for that, I am grateful.

This post sucked.  Next DWYFF will be better!  Crawfish!  Buy ’em!  Eat ’em!  Suck the head!  Bye-BYE!

  1. The Mclaughlin Group is the greatest show ever! It airs Fridays on the Northern California station KEET, but not on KCET that I have to watch now. They show freakin Huel Howser instead… are you fucking kidding me!?
