You Ain’t Done Jack, Jack

In the last two weeks, I’ve fallen asleep during “Man on Fire,” “The Illusionist,” and “Wall Street.” For some reason, I can only stay awake during documentaries. I must be getting old.

But Friday I watched the documentary “Tom Dowd & the Language of Music,” which I highly recommend. I’m probably way late to the party on this one, as I’d never even heard of the guy. But he had a hand in creating both Ray Charles and the nuclear bomb, the perfect embodiments of good and evil.

As a sound engineer, Dowd worked with just about every significant musician of the 20th century. And with the exception of some recent and regrettable Lynard Skynard footage, the movie’s a total inspiration. Watching what Dowd did with his life really makes you want to run out and grab the world by the balls. Movies about brilliant artists always leave me feeling that way – “Crumb,” “Bukowski: Born Into This,” “Springsteen: Wings For Wheels,” etc.

Such ball-grabbing exhileration passes quickly. In fact, rather than change the world, I ended up sitting through Tom Dowd again the next day. That’s not very productive. I doubt the great ones sat on the couch watching the same film twice in 24 hours. But were they happy, I ask you? Were they?

The point is, go watch that movie and recognize how little you’ve achieved in life. It’s available in the Free Movies category if you have onDemand.
